Graveyards

Graveyards

You drove through hills
That rippled along the horizon
And I saw graveyards
With short headstones painted white.
Rows upon rows of unnamed deaths
Between crests of green hills.

Two young lovers
Sat and whispered to each other.
I saw her mouth
Hovering over his ear,
But heard no words,
Only the laughter that followed.

You drove in silence,
And I watched the graveyards -
Far behind us,
But etched inside my eyelids.

Mozart played on the radio.
The Requiem.
