The Beginning of the End

The Beginning of the End

One morning

I woke up as if possessed

By a force unknown,

A wild thing

Fluttering in my heart,

Like freedom winds teasing

A bird with clipped wings.

One morning

I woke up resolute and decisive

And began uprooting him

From our collective memories,

Scrapbooks of a love new,

Now only consolation prizes

A decade later.

I did not know

Whether I would torch them

Or drown them,

But I was certain

I would kill them.

I would conclude

The eradication of the third life

That existed between

Him and I –

The life of all that was ours –

I began to dispose of the “us”

In our home.

Sleep still lingering in his eyes,

He asked me

“What in God’s name

Are you doing?”

“Something holy,” I answered,

“I’m learning to live without you.”
