Innocence Remembered (Inspired by a Fallen Angel)

He was sleeping on our bed,

Snoring loudly,

His legs tangled in the sheets,

His hair tousled,

His arm limply resting

Against mine.

??

A thin ray of dawn sunshine

Was rippling on his cheek,

And a bird was humming

Softly outside the window.

??

I touched his raven curls

And he shifted in his sleep,

His snores stopping for a moment.

I traced my finger

Across his forehead,

Down his eyebrows,

Against his jawline,

And rested at his chin.

??

He opened an eyelid

Languidly

And kissed my hand.

I hid my head in the bend of his arm,

Breathed,

And smelled rain, cologne,

And faint tobacco.

I closed my eyes

And remembered

Innocence –

A time when he smelled of

Soap, vanilla,

And spring.

Then,

In his arms

I slept and dreamt.
