A Plea to Ignorance
Blissful Ignorance,
Your soft lips used to
Kiss the wind around my body,
So I could hold your essence
In both hands.
And it made me forget,
Forget all that I wanted to.
Why is the sweetness of forgotten
Nightmares
Turning into bitterness of
Recollection?
What happened to the sting of
Revulsion
I used to feel in my chest?
Why is fear once again
Fluttering in my heart?
There are no monsoons here,
Then why is the fright returning?
Ignorance, surely,
You are evading my body,
Ah, heartless abandonment, Ignorance!
I have sworn an oath of hate,
I cannot, cannot
Resign this rage,
I cannot, cannot
Retire this odium.
Lovely Ignorance,
I need you just as I need my hatred.
And was it not until yesterday
That I hated him,
And those hands –
Ah, Dear Ignorance,
Descend again
With your soft caresses
And silky murmurs,
Your tinkling laughter in my ears,
And make me forget once more;
Chase away this weakness
And this fear.
And was it not until yesterday
That I hated him,
And those hands?
Why, oh why, precious Ignorance,
Do you not make me forget
The day the monsoons had darkened
The sky of my youth,
And I had hidden in a corner,
Written a poem for him,
And smiled.
You were with me, Ignorance
In that darkness
And I was rocking in your arms.
But it was before hate consumed me
And I saw his face
And felt those filthy hands.
I want you to take me back,
Ignorance,
Hide me in your embrace,
And make me forget
That once my young heart
Had sung a song for him
On the day when
The monsoons were strong,
And I did not know
Of his hands.
I want to dissolve once again
In you,?? sweet Ignorance.
Take me once again,
And make me forget.
