Another Song of Scheherazade

24. Feb, 2007

A thousand nights and one

I have knelt by your side,

Enchanting you with tales

Of strange lands far away

So you may forget

Your vicious intentions.

A thousand nights and one

I have anticipated each blow,

All thundering sounds of torment,

Flesh beating upon flesh.

A thousand nights and one

I have tasted copper on my lips,

Scarlet drops making patterns

Delicately flowing down skin

The color of weak coffee.

A thousand nights and one

I have done your bidding,

My self-proclaimed king!

You do not wear a crown

Yet rule my mind, heart and body.

So this night,

I say good bye.

I will not be imprisoned

In this beautiful cage

You have built for me.

I will not close my eyes,

So I do not see the fire

Blazing in yours.

I will not hide behind

Color and love and stories

Of faraway lands

For I am not the condemned Scheherazade

And you are not my Sultan.

So this night

I will tell you,

I am not,

I am not,

I am not

Who you want me to be.

Well thought out and framed, however one can take a number of meanings out of it. If that was intentional it is brilliant.

A good poet is one who appeals to the sensibilities of different types of readers.
